Festival Fashion: Make Your Own

Festival season is upon! With Glastonbury right around the corner, if you haven’t got sorted yet…don’t worry there is still time (just about!). And you know we aren’t talking about tents and wet wipes, we’re talking festival fashion.

Kate Moss is the unrivalled queen of Glastonbury, showcasing cool undone wavy hair, and paired back outfits.

Come rain or shine, or even mud Kate always has her legs on display, usually by wearing shorts. Shorts are a festival classic and for good reason; they are cool, classic and make it easy to maintain your dignity after one too many in the slippery mud. There are a lot of patterns for sewing your own shorts, but or go to one has to be this Burda’s ‘Ruby #6005’ pattern.

You can make them out of linen or even some of our cotton gabardines.

This ‘Seawashed’ will look particularly good as a pair of shorts.

You could even use this cotton gabardine and embellish it with some tribal appliqué.

Or you could go bold in stripes with this Paul Smith fabric.

In the pattern we have suggested,  the shorts are short, however there is no risk of flashing and the high waist band means they look stylish even when paired with nothing more than an old T-shirt.

Talking about T-shirts, Sienna Miller is another regular festival-goer and is often seen sporting a no fuss vest top. If you want to make your own, try out this pattern. We’d suggest using viscose fabric, or at the very least some fabric with lycra in it, we especially love this emerald green viscose jersey; its bright colour means you can just throw it on and still look great.

Other icon festival outfits from Sienna include black shorts. Copy her look by making your own out of black fabric and wearing with boots.

Viscose dress fabric with a bit of lycra in it is also great for making harem pants. Don’t own a pair of harem pants? Make a pair! They are comfy, easy to wear and look amazing worn with a crop top. This is a great pattern for making them, and if you don’t have any fabrics in mind then try these.

If you don’t want to bare the flesh, a playsuit is a great alternative. While Alexa Chung likes them shorter, this is a great pattern for a longer version. Try it in viscose.

We think this fabric would make such a pretty one:

Alexa is also a fan of sleeveless blouses. Try this pattern for one that is both pretty yet simple, and make it out of one of these light weight cottons for instant chic.

Worried about the great British weather? To keep out the chills at night, you could wear a ‘boyfriend shirt’ we personally think this pattern is great. We also think that some of these fabrics would be great for it.

Supermodel Cara is another one to draw inspiration from, this photo shows her in a paisley cover up. We think something similar made up in this ‘Peacock’ fabric would look stunning!
